About This Quote

The Great God! Is the name of a deity known to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans. The phrase "Great God!" is used by the characters in William Shakespeare's play Macbeth. It is also used in the Bible by two different people. The first time it appears in the Bible is in Job 41:11, where Eliphaz says "Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee?" And Job replies, "Do not speeches deceive you? Do they not rise up against you? Do they not say, `A man who has addressed us must have great knowledge and understanding?' " Then Eliphaz continues with a speech about himself and compares himself to a bird with outstretched wings. He concludes with a statement about his greatness: "I am great among the dead."
